The Cyprus Avicultural Society is actually the rename of the first Club, named Nicosia Canary Club, which was established on the 5th November 1983 with 44 members, only from Nicosia District, who kept and bred canaries only. On the next year and actually on the 5th January 1984 the 1st Annual Exhibition of Canaries was organized in the ancient Gate of Famagusta, in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, and it was inaugurated by the mayor of Nicosia Mr. Lellos Demetriades. At this Annual Show 57 canaries of different colours and mutations were presented.
In 1990 the Nicosia Canary Club was again renamed to Cyprus Society for Singing and Ornamental Birds, so as to admit other fellows from over Cyprus, who were engaged in keeping and breeding different kinds of birds, such as parrots, parakeets, finches, doves and other birds. During the first year the members exceeded one hundred, from all over Cyprus.
In 1991 the Cyprus Society for Singing and Ornamental Birds, was renamed to Cyprus Avicultural Society – CAS, name which is kept up to now. Members have now exceeded 350.
In 2004 CAS enrolled a new society, the Cyprus Society for Waterslager/Malinois Canaries, in order to help members who were engaged with the 4 kinds of melodious canaries, the Malinois, the Roller, the Timbrados and the American Singer. In 2007 two new societies were enrolled, the Cyprus Finch Society and the Cyprus Parrots and Parakeets Society, in order to cover members who were keeping and breeding only Finches and/or Parrots and Parakeets.
